David Williams local Conservative Party Agent

A134 David Williams MBE was the local agent in Trowbridge for the Conservative party in the days when local MP’s had full time agents. The agent’s job was to find members, collect subscriptions, and help the committee select the prospective parliamentary candidate. Then, on election day, to organise the campaign, keep an eagle eye on expenses then rally the supporters to the Polling Booths and keep the prospective member out of trouble.

Back in 1984 the local MP for the Westbury Constituency was Sir Dennis Waters. He was granted a knighthood for having been an MP for 25 years. Before that he was already an MBE, but the rules are you can’t be a knight of the realm and have an MBE. So he had to relinquish that honour.

People used to make a joke of the fact that when Dennis got his knighthood he gave his MBE to David.
